The Brits have a way of making murder entertaining, especially when the victim leaves an estate. In this artful production (winner of four 2014 Tony Awards, including Best Musical), we see strands of this rich tradition of English graveside and gallows humor, woven together with staging and musical threads drawn from the melodramatic Gilbert and Sullivan light opera canon, as well as from the English literary murder mystery tradition, all tied together with state-of-the-art stage effects and scenic design.

Monty Navarro (Kevin Massey) is in love with a blonde bombshell, Sibella Hallward (Kristen Beth Williams), but she judges his prospects as being less than desirable, given her social aspirations and expensive tastes. Then Monty is told by his family's long-time servant and nanny that his mother was a d'Ysquith, one of the wealthiest families in the land, and that all that stands between him and the fortune is eight relatives. Let the unfortunate demises begin!

The score and book by Robert L. Freedman (book and lyrics) and Steven Lutvak (music and lyrics) shines. All the principals—John Rapson, Kevin Masseyu, Kristen Beth Williams, Adrienne Eller, and a host of others deliver marvelous vocal and dramatic performances.

We're not going to tell you how all of this transpires, because that would spoil your fun in trying to figure out what is going to happen next and how this all ends. But let us say that this Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder certainly proves that the author, Monty Navarro, knows what he's talking about. And with that remark, I will leave you to purchase your tickets.

Denver Center for the Performing Arts Broadway's presentation of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder runs through February 28th at the Buell Theatre. For tickets: http://www.denvercenter.org.
